GET STARTED

Now onto getting started! With so many different ways to earn points and redeem there, here is a quick guide to get you going.

Sign up for airline/hotel loyalty programs - start with the airlines and hotels that you frequent the most.  If you travel for work, then sign up for those programs and start earning points.  If you are clueless about this or have never really traveled, no worries! Start out with the airlines like United or Southwest and hotels like Marriott , SPG, and Hilton.  Loyalty programs like these are free to join and often have great signup promos and benefits for just being a member.

Dream of where you want to go - just like you do with anything in life, figure out what's next.  Where do you want to go? When is that going to be? Having a destination in mind will help you define how many points you need to earn to make your dream a reality.

Get a travel rewards credit card
 - start small, you don't need to go for a home run first time you go to bat.  Start with 1 or 2 cards then build up from there (Trust me, you don't need to go crazy and open up 30 different credit cards).  This is a long game where slow and steady wins the race!

Take advantage of signup bonuses - Many credit cards offer signup bonuses if you spend a certain amount within 1-4 months of opening the account.  Take those into consideration because those bonuses are extremely helpful in racking up points.

Everyday spending on travel rewards cards - maximize the amount of points you earn by shifting everyday spending onto travel rewards cards.  Normal purchases like groceries, clothes, restaurants, and any monthly recurring charges (Netflix, Audible, phone bills, etc.) can help you earn points without any effort!

Redeem your points - when you earn enough to go on your trip, redeem them and enjoy! This is the best part! By investing some time into establishing a points earning system will get you on your way before you know it!

Hello There!

Hello! Thanks for visiting my first blog ever! Given that this is my first post, I just want to give you guys an opportunity to get to know me, why I'm writing this blog, and what I hope you get out of it! My name is Ken I'm married to my lovely wife,  Sarah - not Barbie , in my late 20s, and I live in the DC area.  I'm originally from Hong Kong but I moved to the U.S. pretty early in my life and I've been here since!  I'm going to be honest, I'm not that complex of a person.  I love Jesus, my family, friends, traveling, playing with points, and lifting weights.  My favorite food is pizza with pepperoni (LOTS of it). Sarah & I with my first acai bowl EVER I love playing the points game You might be wondering, "what is he going to write about?" and possibly, "what are these points that you're playing with?".  Just to clarify, for the past few years I've had a lot of fun and success at earning and redeeming travel point...

Using Points for a FREE Trip to NYC Worth Over $1,000

Whenever I think New York, I think pricey.  I'm probably going to take a bus up from DC then I need to hop on Priceline or AirBnB to find a cheap place to stay and that's just to get there and stay there.  Unless I plan on starving myself and sitting in a corner, there's a lot more money that needs to be spent.  New York is so great with so much food and fun but it comes with a cost.  However, the story changes when you have some points to help you out. Cookie from Levain Bakery. Today I'm going to share with you guys how I managed to use points to redeem a trip to NYC worth over $1,000 for free!  My wife was already going up for a work trip from Tuesday to Thursday, but we wanted to stay a few extra days to maximize our DINK (Dual Income No Kids) fun before the baby girl comes in May! Technically, it isn't quite fair that she had a free roundtrip Amtrak tickets.  Nevertheless, I extended our trip so we could stay Thursday to Saturday and g...

Review: United MileagePlus Explorer Credit Card

With all the bad rap United has been getting the past few months, I don't blame you if you don't have the best opinion of them.  After all, recent incidents of  dragging people off of planes and denying emotional support peacocks  among others aren't the best examples of offering a good customer experience. Putting that aside, I wanted to use this post to review the United MileagePlus Explorer Credit Card, which was my first travel card that I opened!  We'll cover the card basics, perks, and then weigh the pros and cons to see if you should get this card for yourself. Who wouldn't like to fly to Oregon for free? Let's get on with the basics. The United MileagePlus Explorer Card is operated by Chase and offers a pretty standard earning rate, varying signup bonuses, and annual fee. Earning Rate: Purchase ticket from United - 2x miles per $1 Purchase anything else - 1x miles per $1 Signup Bonus : Ranges from 30,000 - 50,000 miles when you spen...
